      Future in the Past

       

      1. PAST CONTINUOUS

      Future events from a past perspective.

      The movie was beginning in 5 minutes so I didn´t have time to buy the tickets.

       

       

      1. BE GOING TO (past)

      Unfulfilled intentions in the past.

      He was going to come but he missed the train.

       

      1. WOULD

      Future events that happened and predictions from a past perspective.

      She would success in theatre.

      I knew you would come to the party.

       

      1. WAS/WERE TO (past)

      Future events that didn´t happen. Usually followed by past part.

      The Odeon cinema was to have closed in May. (finally they didn´t.)

       

      Future events that happened. Usually followed by infinitive.

      The Odeon cinema was to close in May. (finally they did)

       

      1. BE ABOUT/SUPPOSED TO (past)

      Events or intentions that didn´t happen.

      Sheila was supposed to call me.

      I was about to chair the meeting.

       

      1. BE THINKING OF + ING (past)

      Interrupted future actions.

      I was thinking of going out to dinner when you invited me.
